Film Nights on the Elbe Embankment: Great movies and top cultural events against the backdrop of Dresden Old Town

Germany’s largest open-air cinema and concert festival will take place again this year, framed as always by the world-famous skyline of Dresden Altstadt. You can look forward to no fewer than 66 events between 1st July and 5th September, featuring great films and amazing artists. Helge Schneider, Reinhold Messner, The Great Dirty Dancing Night are just a few of the standout acts on the programme for this 30th running of Film Nights on the Elbe Embankment.

Palais Sommer: Concerts, yoga and an all-round upbeat mood in the park

Enjoy art, culture and enlightenment in a relaxed summer setting. A varied programme that includes concerts, a poetry slam and outdoor painting awaits you in the grounds of the Japanese Palais from 16th July to 22nd August (admission free of charge). There will be art-house cinema with movie gems from different eras, innovative rock-pop artists and singer-songwriters will be performing on stage, and if you want to make yourself comfortable, bring your picnic blanket or folding chair. That’s the joy of Palais Sommer Dresden.

Concerts and theatre in the park

The Grosser Garten (Great Garden) is Dresden’s green lung – the ideal place to go for a walk or a jog as well as for concerts. The Junge Garde open-air theatre is located at the edge of the park. Under an open sky and with suitable social distancing, there will once again be a series of fantastic summer concerts featuring Revolverheld, Bosse and Rea Garvey, to name but a few.

A bit further down the Elbe, the fairy-tale garden of the baroque Übigau Palace is another green oasis. The Comödie Dresden ensemble will again be putting on a programme of summer theatre with new productions of Alice in Wonderland and The Addams Family.

Over hill and dale: Hiking tours in the Elbland region

Broad Elbe meadows, fairy-tale forests and picturesque vineyard slopes – discover the incomparable natural beauty and diversity of Dresden Elbland. Tharandt Forest, the Dresden Heath, the Radebeul vineyards are all within easy reach of urban Dresden, and there is hiking to suit every preference, from a relaxed family walk to a more challenging expedition.

River and lakes: Water sports on the Elbe

With the mighty Elbe and various lakes (natural and manmade), Dresden Elbland has some really picturesque stretches of open water. The beauty of Dresden and the Elbland is perhaps best appreciated from the river, which is why rubber dinghy tours or a trip with the Saxon Steamship Company always prove so popular. But increasingly, you will see stand-up paddlers venturing out onto the Elbe. If you would rather stay on dry land, you can alternatively go for a relaxed walk, skate or cycle along the river bank. The Elbe Cycle Route was laid out for this express purpose.

A host of scenic cycling tours between Pirna and Meissen guarantee something for everyone: from leisurely family outings to sporting challenges, keen cyclists will not be disappointed by what the Elbland has to offer. The Elbe Cycle Route,the 90km Saxon Wine Trail, the finely manicured landscape of the Moritzburg estate, the Tharandt Forest, the countless watermills and streams – it’s all waiting to be (re)discovered right on our doorstep.

Riesling or Dornfelder? Wines at their most exquisite

Welcome to one of the smallest wine-growing regions in Germany. Good soils, around 1,600 hours of sunshine a year and knowledge accumulated over centuries provide optimum conditions for some very special wines. The 15 individual vineyards between Pirna and Deisbar-Seusslitz offer the perfect conditions for an exceptional crop of wine.

Fine whisky from Dresden: Saxony’s first whisky distillery

Germany’s largest whisky manufactory is set to open in Alberthafen this coming September. The first Dresden-distilled whisky will bear the name Hellinger and is already available from specialist retailers. Traditional craftsmanship combined with state-of-the-art production methods has resulted in five new and original Saxon whisky varieties with ingredients from the Dresden Elbland region.

You will find exceptional chocolates from all over the world at Camondas. Pralines, chocolates or ice cream – everything your sweet tooth craves can be found at Welt der guten Schokoladen (World of Good Chocolates). Magnificent paintings: Vermeer exhibition

The Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer created only about 35 works. One of the world’s most famous paintings is the Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window. It has been lavishly restored and can be seen in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) from 10th September onwards. A total of nine further exhibits will be arriving from Europe and the USA for the largest exhibition on Vermeer in Germany to date.
