King Albert Tower

At a glance

On the slopes of Weinböhla there are several towers and lookout points from which you can overlook the town and the Elbe valley very well. The tower, built in 1898, is one of the three towers of Weinböhla. With a height of 20 meters, it decorates the image of the city and is recognizable from afar.

In 1896, Carl Schweitzer had a park restaurant built on the Schweizerhöhe and submitted an application to the municipality. This was approved with the condition that a 15 m high tower also be erected. The construction costs amounted to 5000 RM, which were paid by the father of Mrs. Schweizer, the lime quarry owner Karl Vetter.

The tower was inaugurated in 1898 on Schweizerhöhe and named after the then ruling Saxon King Albert. In addition to the tower, the grounds included an outdoor dance hall, tennis court, monkey enclosure and toboggan run.

The tower fell into disrepair from the 1950s, and was finally closed until 1999. The local council decided to make the tower usable again for the prospective application for recognition as a state-recognized resort. In 1998 the renovation work began and on 17.07.1999 the ceremonial inauguration took place.

The tower offers a comprehensive panoramic view up to a distance of about 60 km. It is the most popular destination of the community. Since its opening, more than 25000 visitors from near and far have climbed the tower. The tower is in the care of the community of interest "Ortslehrpfad", which also manages the opening with its members.
